In the Snap Space, Sophia Gaeun Lee presents Come Into My Heart, A multimedia exhibition of sound, sculpture,  highlighting themes of identity, addressing and memorializing topics of heritage, cultural duality, religion, relationships, gratitude, and traditions.  At a time when otherness is becoming something to fear instead of being celebrated, Lee is working to build out a multi-sensory experience for the viewer that opens their own heart to ideas and experiences that may be outside their own.

From Lee’s Artist Statement:

My work is rooted in my heritage. Pulling from my Korean-American family experiences and perseverance, I explore themes ranging from isolation, separation, and grieving, to the small and intimate moments of triumph and joy. I give shape to the adversities we’ve faced, the sacrifices we’ve made, and the lessons we’ve learned. Within each of these, there remains a constant and deep rooted yearning for unity. Materials intrigue me, individually they have hidden histories and cultural references. I work with mixed media and language to conjure images, engage the senses, and tell the stories that have been foundational in my life. The use of multiple materials creates a layered and multi-sensory experience that gives shape to the moments that are lost in translation, the strange in between, as a way to go beyond the limits of language. My art practice allows me to process and document the ongoing assimilations of myself and my family as we navigate our unfolding histories in the shifting landscape of contemporary American culture.

Lee is the first place winner of the 30th annual Undergrad Juried Exhibition. This is Lee’s First Solo Exhibition.
