Since 1975, KCAC has championed contemporary artists by providing opportunities to create, exhibit, and connect with the community. From our first grassroots exhibitions to our present home in Midtown, we remain dedicated to supporting artists at every stage of their careers and increasing awareness and appreciation of contemporary art.
-
Rooted in Kansas City and inspired by the prairie, we imagine a city where art is woven into daily life, where artists are celebrated, and where community comes together through creativity. Our vision for the new Kansas City Arts Center is an invitation: a place that belongs to everyone. We are bursting our bubble and opening wide the doors so more of our neighbors can engage with the arts, dream alongside us, and help shape Kansas City’s cultural future.
-
Since 1975, we have believed that art should be accessible to all — not limited by cost, background, or identity. Our exhibitions and programs are free and open to the public, because we know that removing barriers is the most powerful step we can take toward inclusivity.
We honor the communities we serve without tokenizing them.
We will never reduce people to statistics or use their identities as proof of our values. Instead, we measure our impact through belonging: the trust of artists who choose to exhibit with us, the neighbors who gather in our galleries, and the members who sustain us.We commit to equity as an ongoing practice. Equity is not a box to check but a responsibility we carry. We remain open to feedback, reflection, and growth. As we look to the future — including the creation of a new Kansas City Arts Center — we commit to making KCAC a place where all feel welcome, represented, and valued.
-
KCAC’s impact can be seen in the people we reach and the artists we support. Our programming is open and free to the public, making KCAC a gathering place for neighbors across Kansas City and beyond.

Our Commitment
Supporting artists means more than presenting their work — it means opening doors, creating opportunities, and ensuring their voices are part of Kansas City’s cultural conversation. -
In December 2024, KCAC successfully relaunched Forum, our bi-monthly magazine dedicated to contemporary art and critical dialogue. Ad-free and community-driven, the magazine highlights KCAC exhibitions, features artists from across the region, and provides space for thoughtful engagement with ideas shaping contemporary culture.
Since its relaunch:
5 issues published between December 2024 and [insert most recent month/year].
Distributed to KCAC members, community partners, and cultural stakeholders across Kansas City.
Features include artist profiles, critical essays, and exhibition highlights that extend KCAC’s impact beyond the gallery walls.
The Forum connects our grassroots community of artists, writers, and readers — continuing KCAC’s legacy of lifting up regional voices while fostering dialogue that reaches far beyond Kansas City.

KCAC has always been grassroots and growing. Now, we are preparing for our boldest step yet — establishing the Kansas City Arts Center.
The vision is simple but powerful: a space that belongs to Kansas City. More galleries, more studios, classrooms for workshops, and room for artists and neighbors to gather. With over 27,000 square feet compared to our current 2,700, the Kansas City Arts Center will expand our reach and open the door for even more people to experience contemporary art.
The Kansas City Arts Center is about more than a building. It is about bursting the bubble of what KCAC has been and inviting more of Kansas City to engage with the arts. Together, we can build a space that reflects the imagination, curiosity, and community that have defined KCAC since 1975.
We invite you to join us in shaping this next chapter for Kansas City’s creative community.
Dear Friends,
KCAC has been part of Kansas City’s creative fabric since 1975. From humble beginnings to hosting more than 1,200 exhibitions, we’ve grown alongside our city — always championing local artists and creating opportunities for everyone to experience the joy of making and seeing art. Like the prairie grass that surrounds us here in the Midwest, our roots run deep. Prairie grass holds the soil in place and sustains the life around it; in the same way, KCAC has helped steady our creative community, preventing cultural erosion and nourishing growth for nearly fifty years.
This past year gave us so many reminders of what it means to belong to this community. We celebrated artists whose work challenges and inspires us. We opened doors to neighbors and visitors who are discovering KCAC for the first time. We grew through partnerships that reflect the values of our city — collaboration, care, and creativity. Each step forward has been rooted in people, not just programs: the artists who hang their work in our galleries, the volunteers who help make events possible, the members who keep showing up because they believe art matters.
And as we look ahead, we allow ourselves to dream. In our wildest dreams, we see KCAC growing into a new arts center — one that belongs to Kansas City. This will be a place where more of our neighbors can engage with the arts, where new audiences are welcomed in, and where artists find the space they need to thrive. We are bursting our bubble and opening wide the doors. The Kansas City Arts Center is not just for us — it is for everyone who believes art has the power to connect, inspire, and transform.
None of this would be possible without you. You are part of this story — whether you’ve been with KCAC since the beginning or are just now finding your place here. Because of you, we remain grassroots and growing. Because of you, we can keep imagining what’s possible.
With gratitude and anticipation,
Courtney Wasson

KC Contemporary Dance’s performance was inspired by water and the Missouri River
At our 2025 Annual Benefit Art Auction, KCAC chose to share the spotlight.
Rather than keeping the stage to ourselves, we partnered with two remarkable organizations — KC Contemporary Dance and Missouri River Relief — weaving their voices and missions into our biggest fundraiser of the year.
This decision reflects more than collaboration; it reflects who we are. KCAC believes that Kansas City’s creative and cultural vitality depends on shared effort, mutual support, and lifting one another up. When we celebrate art, we also celebrate the people, organizations, and communities that make our city thrive.
Executive Director Courtney Wasson filming a spoken word performance celebrating the second issue of The Object during the 2025 opening of the Annual Undergraduate Student Juried Exhibition. By sharing our space with The Object, KCAC affirms our belief that more publications celebrating local art and culture showcase the strength and diversity of our community.

I had a solo show last August and was thrilled with the professionalism and fantastic communication from KCAC. This was my first show outside my small limited region. I felt very welcomed and encouraged. I sold 3 pieces and was inspired to focus more on gallery work. I'm really thankful for KCAC for giving me the opportunity to show my work to a larger audience.

I was extremely grateful to show there. Everyone there was great to work with and very accommodating. It was really valuable for me to see how the curator installed my work - it was my favorite iteration of this particular solo exhibition so far. I was able to make new connections to the KC arts community and get the word out about my work by exhibiting at KCAC. I really appreciated the willingness of KCAC to help me put programming together and to be able to give a speech and answer questions at the opening. They handled my work with the utmost care and respect and I would show there again in a heartbeat!

I had an exhibition in October 2024. It was a really nice experience and I was thankful for the pedestals and room prep for my show. The staff was very helpful and made the process easy for me. The KCAC show was my first exhibition and it was a really great experience for me. I sold three pieces at my opening and one of those sales was to a new client. The main goal of the KCAC show was to create a new body of work. I wasn’t too concerned with selling but was thankful for it. It was really great and a helpful stepping stone for me into exhibiting my work.
